Coming Soon…

August is here, summer is almost over. It’s going to be a busy month for us, however. We’ll be spending most of the second half of the month on the east coast, visiting first DC and then New York. The agenda is mostly to take the boys to the major museums and other big tourist sites but I’m not averse to checking out a whisky bar or two if the opportunity presents itself. So if you have any recommendations reasonably close to the Convention Center in DC or within easy reach of the Upper Westside in New York, please make them below. Please also, as usual, look at the long list of potential reviews below and nominate to the short list any you’d particularly like to see reviewed. On the food front I will be wrapping up my reports from Canada in June and the North Shore in early July and maybe I’ll have another Twin Cities report or two before we leave town as well. And, who knows, I may even get around to posting my review of Priya Krishna’s Indian(-ish). I checked and I’ve actually been threatening that since May…

  1. Brandy Library in Tribeca and Copper and Oak on the LES. 1 train from UWS to Franklin for Brandy Library, Copper and Oak would require checking Google Maps.

  2. In DC, really enjoyed an upscale Laotian restaurant. Thip Kao.

Also Jose Andres’ Jaleo for tapas, good Spanish wine list and a table that’s basically a sit down foosball table with a tempered glass top.

  3. What, no trip to Scotland this year? And I was hoping for reports from various distillery tours and a few hundreds of pictures of casks lying around. I don’t know much about blogging, but I imagine My Annoying Opinions has a multi-million dollar budget, so this should be easily rectified.

    • No, no trip to Scotland this year. Though I am hoping to make it there next summer to belatedly celebrate my 50th birthday. Yes, it’s true that when you add up all the payola I get from booze companies it’s quite a lot of money. But I do have to pay a lot to the Dictionary people for my use of the word “apricot” in all my tasting notes.

  4. I would heartily recommend Jack Rose in DC. Check out Ace beverage for a good rum selection if you have time. Lots of whiskey too, though I never pay attention to what they have. Unfortunately they have no useful web presence.

Too bad Thip Khao is closed. It is very very good.

  5. I’d be interested in seeing a Laphroaig Cairdeas Triple Wood review. The main reason is that is one that’s pretty easy to find on the shelf now. Thx.

    • I haven’t yet got my hands on a bottle—waiting for it to get a little cheaper locally. Since I’m heading out of town early next week it might take till the end of the month for me to locate a bottle. I’m looking forward to it though.
