Khatti Dal

Khatti means “sour” and this is indeed a sour dal–tamarind is the souring agent; it is also a spicy dal (though you wouldn’t think so from a recipe featured in the New York Times a year or so ago). So very different from all the various dals that we Bengalis eat, and rather good here.
